In the month of March of nineteen sixty seven, the Daewoo Group was started by Kim Woo-Jung. He was the son of the Provincial Governor of Daegu. He first graduated from the Kyonggi High School and next studied at Yonsei University in Seoul where he completed an Economics Degree. Daewoo became amongst the Big Four chaebol in South Korea. Growing into a multi-faceted service conglomerate and an industrial empire, the company was well-known in expanding its global market securing numerous joint projects internationally.
After the end of the Syngman Rhee government during the 1960s, Park Chung Hee's new government came aboard to encourage development and growth in the country. This financed industrialization, promoted exports, increased access to resources, provided protection from competition to the chaebol in exchange for a company's political support. Initially, the Korean government instigated a series of 5 year plans wherein the chaebol were required to accomplish a series of certain basic aims.
Once the second 5 year plan was implemented, Daewoo became a major player. The business greatly profited from government-sponsored cheap loans that were based on probable profits earned from exports. At first, the business focused on textile and labor intensive clothing industries that provided high profit margins. South Korea's huge labor force was the most significant resource within this plan.
Between the years of 1973 and 1981, when the third and fourth 5 year plans happened for Daewoo; Korea's labour force was in high demand. The countries competitive advantage started to dwindle because of increased competition from various countries. In response to this change, the government responded by focusing its effort on electrical and mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, construction efforts, petrochemicals and military initiatives.
Eventually, Daewoo was forced by the government into shipbuilding. Even if Kim was reluctant to enter the trade, Daewoo rapidly earned a reputation for manufacturing competitively priced oil rigs and ships.
During the next decade, the government of Korea brought a lot more liberal economic policies by loosening the protectionist restrictions on imports, reducing positive discrimination, and encouraged small private businesses. While supporting free market trade, they were also able to force the chaebol to be more assertive abroad. Daewoo successfully established several joint ventures together with European and American businesses. They expanded exports, semiconductor design and manufacturing, machine tools, aerospace interests, and different defense products under the S&T Daewoo Business.
In the end, Daewoo began producing civilian airplanes and helicopters that were priced much cheaper compared to those produced by its counterparts in the U.S. The business expanded their efforts in the automotive industry. Impressively, they became the 6th biggest car manufacturer in the world. Through this time, Daewoo was able to have great success with reversing faltering businesses in Korea.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Daewoo moved into different sectors comprising computers, consumer electronics, buildings, telecommunication products and musical instruments like the Daewoo Piano.
